¡Hola Cabo San Lucas, Mexico!

Basking in the sunset glow on the beach of Pueblo Bonito Pacifica

Friday, May 7th. Finally. Carried over 43 hours of vacation from last year and am ready to take a few days. Of course I had to really earn them by working until 10:00 both of the previous evenings on the deal that WON’T get done! Even Friday morning when I am supposed to be officially on vacation, I am yet again on the phone with legal working on the contract…..ARGH!

However, all of this last minute angst certainly made it easier to decide to spend $100 each for an upgrade to first class. (We were on mileage tickets, so no free upgrade with my Chairman Status). Heck, I would save $20 alone in free drinks 😉

Enjoying it all...

It was so painfully obvious that I needed a vacation, particularly when we got in the car to head to the airport and the seat belt would not release and I am LITERALLY yelling at the seat belt! Yes, the seat belt. “Stupid seat belt, what is the matter with you?!?!?!?!” I turned to Carl and starting laughing (slightly hysterically) “oh, my gosh, I really do need a vacation, I’m yelling at the seat belt.” Carl said “I need you to have a vacation!” He’s been so patient. Incredibly so.

Once on the plane, I am about to turn off the Blackberry for good, but first, one last housekeeping item – change my greeting to let everyone know that I WON’T be calling them back until Wednesday. Check. Done! Bring me a margarita.

We love the new cocktails they have on USAirways (ok, maybe I love them, Carl just likes them). In fact, Carl thinks the Mai Tai is the best he’s ever had. So, he a Mai Tai and me a Margarita, ahh…I’m starting to feel the tension release. The second one really helped and the third….well, that was just for good measure.

Very smooth and uneventful flight – less than 2 hours from take off to landing. Customs up next and the lines weren’t too bad but two flights landed at the same time so it was fortuitous that we were in the front of the plane so we got closer to the front of the line. Just as we were about to get our turn with the agent, this young frantic blonde young woman comes rushing up asking if we mind if she cuts in front of us as her best friend is getting married in an hour and she is in the wedding! Of course we said yes, but then I’m curious. How the hell did she cut it so close? What happened?

Come to find out, she lost her passport and apparently didn’t realize it was lost until shortly before she was supposed to leave, which made her miss her original flight. (although she was able to get her passport replaced in 5 hours – she’s lucky there is a passport office in Denver). They couldn’t get her on a flight Friday so she was booked on the Saturday flight and then her flight was delayed. Her best friend had been calling her since the moment she landed in an absolute panic. I asked her if the wedding had been planned on short notice (I just can’t imagine anyone being that careless). “NO!!!” she screamed, “she’s been planning this for OVER A YEAR!” Holy cow. She flew through customs and off to retrieve her bag and bridesmaid dress and to change into in the Taxi… can you imagine?

Although getting through customs was fairly smooth (other than the aforementioned wedding fiasco), the drive to the hotel was about an hour and $95 for a Taxi! We could have shared a shuttle, but since we are staying at the most distant Hotel, it would have added significant time to the journey. Plus, our taxi driver stopped at a market so we could buy some beer and Tequila since the reviews we read about our resort (Pueblo Bonito Pacifica) specifically called out that the drinks were incredibly expensive AND you aren’t supposed to bring in your own food or beverage. We ignored that rule right off the bat and brought one entire suitcase filled with red wine, bottled water, Fresca and Diet Red Bull. That way, we have an empty suitcase to bring back purchases!

I must say though that all the other reviews about the resort were spot on. It is amazing! The minute we pulled up you could see the level of detail that was put into the design. It has only been open 5 years and is incredibly well appointed.

In the lobby

Carl is the master at getting deals and upgrades so I left him to check in while I checked out our surroundings. Magnificent views, pounding, and I do mean POUNDING, surf. I think this will do very nicely.

When I come back Carl has an offer (reasonable) to upgrade us to a very nice suite with separate living room, large outdoor patio with lounge chairs, top floor, great views and get this, A BUTLER! I’ve never had a butler. I’ve always wanted a butler. Yes! Yes! Let’s take the suite with the butler! The room wasn’t quite ready, but we were hungry so we decided we would go get a nice snack while we waited for our room. But first, our Butler, Martín, shows up, introduces himself, gives us his personal cell number that we can reach him at from any house phone 24/7 and escorts us to the pool side restaurant, assuring us he will return to get us after we finish lunch.

Next to the "medium" temperature pool

We share a trio of salsas and chips and some grilled chicken tacos – all which were fabulous, particularly the guacamole.

True to his word, as soon as we had asked for the check, there he was, Martín. Our Butler. Up to our room we go and we met up with the bellman who had all of our luggage (the entire time I am worried that my backpack is going to fall off and the bottle of tequila is going to break all over the floor and we will be outed for all of our contraband liquor!) Fortunately, all the booze made if safely.

Martín shows us the ins and outs of the room as well as his service to us. He then asked if we would like help unpacking. ACK! NO, NO, NO… that’s fine, no help needed. Carl tells him that’s my thing and I have a certain method for unpacking…(which is true, but we were really worried about the contraband…)

We changed clothes, unpacked and settled into our room (hid the booze) and then walked down to the ocean so Carl could take some pre-sunset pictures with the surf spray. It was an absolutely stunning evening and perfect weather. By this time we are both pretty tired. It’s been a long few days. We head back up to the room and settle into our lounge chairs, me with my Kindle, Carl with his iPad. Ahh, life is good. We nap and read and then decide to order room service dinner. Neither of us are very hungry and don’t really want to get dressed up for dinner (we are limited to restaurants at the resort, which are great, but expensive, unless we take a taxi into town). I ordered tortilla soup, chicken quesadillas and french fries with ranch dressing. Carl is cracking up at my order. “Well, you told me I could order whatever I wanted”… “that’s what I wanted.”

Room service

The food shows up and is set up by not one, but two, servers. They even brought a candle! The steaming hot tortilla soup is served from a large carafe with about three servings of soup, the quesadillas were delish and the fries – perfecto! It was the perfect end to a perfect first day! I was then channel surfing while Carl was in the living room and he could hear this loud Spanish voice emanating from the TV. He asked me what I was watching. I told him “you have to come see this”…Naked TV! On the E! Channel! I’m not talking just a couple breast shots, I am talking about full on NAKED! Wild on – NAKED. Their mothers would be so proud… yikes!

Adios until tomorrow….

Dad, we got your latest comment. 🙂

It really is a wonderful place to unwind. I too thought about the trips you and mom made to the resorts in the Bahamas, and actually shared that memory with Bev a couple of days ago.
